How does karate apply to success in school?

Everything learned inside the dojo is meant to be transferred and applied to life outside of the dojo.

Being a top student in school requires certain skills: dedication, humility, discipline, and plenty more. In my experience, martial arts either introduced me to these ideas or strengthened my ability to implement them. One of the best lessons I believe any martial artist can come to realize is that everything learned inside the dojo is meant to be transferred and applied to life outside of the dojo. I will never forget being taught that a black belt must be black belt everywhere they go, not only when they put on their uniform. The same is true for any rank. To train at a high level, a young karateka must learn to apply the lessons they learn at MEKA to school.

In high school I was constantly faced with time management dilemmas. To attain good grades and achieve what I wanted to in my extracurriculars, I had to learn to get things done even when I was tired or didn’t feel like it. Self-discipline made that possible for me. At Harvard I am confronted with challenging tasks every day, and I rarely have all the answers. Asking lots of questions and respectfully putting my ego aside in order to learn is crucial. I practiced that all of the time growing up as a martial artist. Even more, practical skills from karate like engaging professionally with adults or speaking in front of a group have helped me do well in school.

There are many ways to be successful in an environment like school. I believe a child that enjoys learning and tries their best is doing amazingly well, regardless of perfect grades or test scores. Making the connection between martial arts training and other aspects of a young person’s life is absolutely a game changer, though. This is part of what makes karate such a special activity and different from other sports or clubs. Whether it’s trying to practice a mokuso meditation before an exam or speaking loud and clear while answering a question, opportunities to practice connecting karate and school are all around.
